More than 1,500 special needs kids are now active community members thanks to AdaptAbilities.
As the piece above indicates, AdaptAbilities came from humble beginnings. The organization was first born in Michelle's basement in 2004. Now AdaptAbilities has grown to include three unique home-like settings across the City of Edmonton. Each program was developed based on identifying and understanding the gaps within the current system.
The first service was respite. Her ideas are innovative, unique and progressive. The idea of a Relief Care Specialist came to light as families struggled to find the “right” match to support their child. Michelle made it a priority to look at the needs AND interests of the child. For example, a family whose child required Physical Therapy would be matched with a student studying Physical Therapy. Now families had peace of mind knowing they had a knowledgeable staff keen on gaining practical and useful experience on their journey to their chosen career. Stress decreased for families and because of the mutual interests and satisfaction this resulted in long term placements. The underlying purpose of the work Michelle started was a proactive and preventive measure of keeping families intact.
