Frequently Asked Questions

  • How do new families get started?

All families who have not previously connected to AdaptAbilities programs and services are required to complete our intake process by contacting our Support Office at 780-431-8446.

  • Where are your programs located?

Programs are situated throughout Edmonton in a variety of centre-based and community locations.

For our year round program schedule, hours, and locations, click here.

  • When do your Hearts in Action Summer Camps run?

Our HIA camps run Monday – Friday (excluding holidays) in July and August. Camps start at 9:00 am and end at 3:00 pm. Before-and-after camp care options are available.

  • Can I receive services if I do not have a funding agreement?

Yes. Please contact our Support Office to discuss your options and fees/payment information.

  • What programs are offered per age group?

AdaptAbilities offers a range of programming from ages 3-18+. Please contact AdaptAbilities to find a program that suits your needs.

  • When will I hear about my confirmation?

A Program Supervisor will be in touch within two business days of receiving your completed registration package. You are not considered to be confirmed in a program unless all information is received by AdaptAbilities. Registrations are processed in the order they are received.

  • Why do I have to fill out an updated consent form every year?

Consent Forms are valid for a period of one year, and need to be renewed August 31. Each parent is required to complete the update and consent forms to ensure all the information we have on file is correct. Participants will not be able to attend programming without completed forms.

  • When can I register?

Please see the Important Dates form available for download, as this document outlines all registration launch dates. Registrations are accepted year-round.

  • How can I speed up my registration to be confirmed quicker?

Registrations are confirmed on a first come, first served basis based on completed registration package. To be considered complete, registration packages need to include:

    • Current photo of your child
    • Completed consent forms
    • Annual update forms
    • Payment(s)

Your child will not be put into program spots until all information is received by AdaptAbilities. This may result in loss of preferred spots.

  • Is there a cost?

For camps, there is a $100 deposit required to register, payable at time of registration. See Cancellation Policy for further information. Costs not covered by a Funding Agreement are the responsibility of the parent/guardian.

For all other programs, see the Parent Handbook for further information on fees and services.

  • How long does it take to get involved with actual programming? When can my child start?

Once an intake is completed and all required documentation is on file, AdaptAbilites will do their best to accommodate your child at the earliest possible date.

Please note that some programs are in high demand, and there may be a wait-list. AdaptAbilities will do their best to accommodate all requests.

  • What will my child be doing?

Each AdaptAbilities program is centered around three components:

    • Expressive Arts: Includes arts and crafts activities.
    • Essential Life Skills: Age-dependent and are aimed at increasing independence. Activities can involve things like learning to take transit, cooking skills, etc.
    • Recreation and Motor Development: Includes physical activities, games and exercise.

Community integration, involvement, field trips and volunteer opportunities occur as often as possible to ensure a child is a part of their own community.

  • What type of training does the staff have?

    Staff undergo the following training:

    • First Aid
    • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI)
    • Risk Management and Behavioral training for individuals with complex needs.
    • A variety of additional special needs training focusing on a human rights approach.
    • Staff requiring to administer medications are certified in Medication Administration.
