Work Experience
Hearts in Action is Edmonton’s unique summer program for children with special needs.
- Enhance motor skills
- Build on essential life skills
- Explore creative talents
Hearts in Action provides fun and enjoyable goal-directed activities right at the core of your child’s stage of development. Our small group settings foster the growth of the individual - socially, physically, mentally and emotionally.
Hearts in Action is much like a typical school day. This one-of-a-kind camp offers extra support for children and young adults with special needs and those who just need a helping hand from our qualified staff members who understand their individual needs.
Knowledgeable staff and smaller group sizes are the key to making sure your child succeeds and has fun.
Individuals participate in recreation and motor development, essential life skills and expressive arts activities throughout the day within their designated age group.
Facilitated by highly-qualified relief care specialists, Hearts in Action staff are committed to help your child or young adult reach their full potential, within a safe and caring environment.
At The Heart of Recreation and Motor Development
Each day, your child will be given plenty of opportunities to practice their skills. We adapt activities to overcome challenges and refine movement so individuals can enjoy healthy and active lifestyles.
At The Heart of Essential Life Skills
Here children work on tasks to increase their independence and self-esteem. Your child or young adult builds on their life skills through role playing, cooperative games, critical thinking exercises and real life situations. Staff members guide individuals to develop and maintain socially acceptable behaviours as they are challenged throughout daily activities.
At The Heart of Expressive Arts
Another vital piece in your child’s development is their ability to express themselves. Your child will be working with friends to complete projects designed to encourage their senses through music, arts and crafts and theatre sports. In addition, they continue to learn, solve problems and make decisions.
Additional Notes
Children will enjoy two field trips per week (i.e. swimming and one community event).
Lunches and snacks are the responsibility of the participants.
Out of Camp Care is available at an additional cost.
Personal care, medical needs and/or behavioural needs requires 1:1 aid.
For transportation inquiries contact Camp Coordinator at 431-8446.
Team Work
Children work together in groups throughout the camp. In addition to the component leader, there are 5 children and one instructor in each group. To ensure the success of each child, teams are based on the following age groups:
- 4-6 years
- 7-10 years
